Professional Certification Description
The Certified Professional by the American Heart Association – Tobacco Treatment (CPAHA) is available to health care professionals committed to helping their patients live longer, healthier lives by stopping the use of tobacco.
Tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the United States and globally. Cigarette smoking, the most common form of tobacco use, is a major risk factor for CVD and stroke. The tobacco endgame — the path to ending tobacco use and nicotine addiction in the U.S. — is within sight. But e-cigarettes and other products pose a threat to this goal and to the lives of many Americans. The endgame strategy needs to be coordinated with long-standing evidence-based tobacco control strategies, including evidence-based tobacco cessation therapies.
To be eligible, professionals must have a minimum associate degree level education. Additionally, professionals must first complete an accredited Tobacco Treatment education program. Upon completion and attestation to meeting the education requirements, professionals will be eligible to sit for the 175-question (150 scored questions, 25 unscored questions), live remotely proctored certification exam. The certification exam will be delivered by Meazure Learning and candidates will have 3 hours to complete the exam. After completion of required prerequisites and purchase the product, candidates will receive notification within 3 business days via email from Meazure Learning with details on how to schedule the exam when ready. Upon passing the exam, the American Heart Association will award the professional with CPAHA certification and credentials for individual recognition in accordance with provided branding guidelines.
To retain the certification past the three-year award period, the professional must complete certification maintenance criteria with continuing education credits and fees. If the certification is not maintained, it is no longer active for professional use and display.
